Part 1: Documentary Summary
Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s documentary Detropia documents the slowly crumbling Detroit. The documentary focuses on the economic decline of Detroit due to the changes that have occurred in the automobile industry, and how the decline in the industry has adversely affected the residents of the city. The film mainly focuses on three residents and includes clips containing historic footage of the city. The three residents reflect on their experiences and the observations they can make on the city including both challenges and opportunities (Ewing and Grady, 2012). They lament about the status quo and protest against the powerful and recall on the city’s glory days. The documentary moves from a union hall to another, focuses on the negotiations entailing contentious plans to transform the wasteland into urban farms.
Part 2: Relationship to Chapter 6
Chapter 6 discusses the concepts of socially excluded groups and globalization and how they affect cities. Regarding social exclusion, the growth of cities has tended to lead to an emergence of a group of people who are unable to access resources, goods and services that are available to the rest of the individuals in the society. Social exclusion means that a group of people does not enjoy the benefits that the rest of the members have.
