Response to Hughey's "The White Savior Film and Reviewer's Reception
In “The White Savior Film and Reviewer's Reception”, Matthew Hughey highlights that film reviews are racialized despite the perception that people are color-blind in a post racial society. To Hughey, the representation of whites as rescuers of people of color, reinforces norms of whiteness and idealizes white Americans. The media and white savior films subgenre also mediate how people interpret these types of films. Teacher saviors in the school-related films middle class white female teachers tend to teach low-income, at risk and non white students. The students reach success because of the teacher’s efforts and methods since they are able to ‘understand’ the students’ experiences.
