Institution Movie Review: The Square
The Square is a satirical and comedy movie which was released in May 2017. It was written and directed by Reuben Ostlund. It is starring Claes Bang, who plays the role of Christian, a curator at the X-Royal art museum who is faced with different personal issues, including his sex life, work, and his fathering abilities, among others. Other casts in the film are Elisabeth Moss as Anne, a journalist, Dominic West as Julian, Terry Notary as Oleg, Christopher Laesso as Michael, among others. (Wilkinson, A. 2017)
The movie uses fiction to try to explore many real issues affecting a contemporary man in contemporary society. Christian face many life obstacles. As the movie begins, he successfully defends a woman who was being chased by a man only to realize later that it was a planned game as he later realizes that his phone and wallet had gone missing. He, however, tracks the phone from his computer and recovers it through letters he dropped, threatening the thief to return his phone and wallet. Christian struggles in front of a mirror in the bathroom to practice a speech he is going to give and even ends up abandoning his written notes and opts to give the speech from his heart. However, he sees it as a strength rather than a weakness, although he is struggling with it. He is too preoccupied that he even forgets the names of women he falls into affairs with. It is also important to note that Christian is struggling to bring up his children. (Wilkinson, A. 2017)
Even with these challenges, Christian has to give his full attention in managing the promotion of a new exhibition dubbed The Square. The advertising agency opted to use social media and attract attention using violence by having a young girl walk into a square and being killed by an explosion. This was against the curator's statement on exhibitions. Christian approves it to be uploaded on to the company's social media platforms without previewing it. The clip receives hostile responses forcing Christian to resign. (Wilkinson, A. 2017)
The art language is fascinating because it has two contradicting sides. Many people assume it not to be taken seriously, but at the same time, it communicates real issues. The ability for Christian to quickly adapt to the artistic language, however, has affected him in that he now tries to avoid reality. This is seen in how he brings up his family and how he relates to other people. He seems to have neglected his children and cannot provide adequately to them since his marriage broke up because he could not maintain it. He has very few friends in his circle too. At his workplace, he surpris...
