The ballet Le Sacre du Printemps "The Rite of Spring" premiered in the early 20th century and was a creation of both music and choreography. The acts focus on the consecration of the spring, with emphasis on a linear musical structure where the percussion is the most played instrument. The choreography is based on the idea that a maiden was to be sacrificed and had to dance to her death to acquire the benevolence of the gods. The dancers danced barefoot throughout the performance, which strengthened the sensory experience. Pina Bausch Wuppertal Dance Theater choreographed version had the young virgin girl in the middle wearing a red dress and surrounded by other dancers, preparing her for the ultimate sacrifice.
In Pina Bausch‘s production the dancers are use the stage space well to highlight the pagan rite, moving in different directions and circling around the maiden. Joffrey Ballet's 1987 production utilized the original consumes and choreography of the dance production, and there was a visible circle around the young girl and the dancers held their arms up (Mingus, 2010). In the dance, there is little variation in the music, and this helps make the choreography appear like a rite as this begins with the victim being brought on stage by a young male, and the mostly female dancers then circle around her. Bausch went beyond the classical structure highlighting the importance of the rite in the dance and the choreographic intentions are apparent through the movements that the victim made compared to the other performers. The Rite of Passage has been reinterpreted various times, but contains elements of the maiden as the sacrificial lamb and Bausch highlighted that the young dancer and female performer would not let her go down without a fight.
