Instructions for the lab:
Familiarize yourself with the microscope, run the tutorial and examine the parts you will be working with. Then, answer the following questions and look at the four slides using the virtual microscope (see directions below). Upload this worksheet to the Canvas site when completed.
- How many objectives are on the virtual microscope?
- What are the numbers listed on each of the objectives?
- Compute the total magnification for the four objectives of the virtual microscope (assume that the ocular lens is 10X):
- View the slide (top right) labeled "letter e". Follow the tutorial and use the microscope adjustments to focus the "e" on each of the objectives.
Draw the "e" exactly as it appears

- Now view the other three slides (Onion root tip, bacteria, and cheek smear) and draw what you see of each of them at the same three magnifications.
- Using a Venn Diagram, list the structures the eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells have in common and those they do not have in common.
- When do you see more details of the object on the slide, at lower or higher magnification?

1 How many objectives are on the virtual microscope?
There are four objectives on the virtual microscope.
2 What are the numbers listed on each of the objectives?
The numbers are 4, 10, 40, and 100.
3 Compute the total magnification for the four objectives of the virtual microscope (assume that the ocular lens is 10X):
For 4x scanning objective: 4 x 10x=40x ; for 10x objective: 10 x 10x= 100x
For 40x objective: 40 x 10= 400x
For 100x objective: 100 x 10x= 1000x
4 View the slide (top right) labeled "letter e". Follow the tutorial and use the microscope adjustments to focus the "e" on each of the objectives.
Draw the "e" exactly as it appears
