Farm Bill
The Farm Bill of 2014 (P.L. 113-79, H.Rept. 113-333) is a multi-year piece of legislation that not only authorizes, but also guides the funding for most of the federal farm and food policies. This includes the nutrition assistance supplementation program (SNAP). Through a reauthorization process, Congress renews the Farm Bill every five years. The House Agriculture Committee and the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee are the legislative committees having jurisdiction over this bill. The bill will restructure farm commodity support, expand insurance coverage on crops, consolidate programs on conservation, revise and reauthorize nutrition assistance, and extend authorities geared towards appropriating funds for the United States agricultural department (USDA) discretionary programs through FY 2018. The main sponsors for this bill were Senators Frank Lucas and Debbie Stabenow. The final senatorial vote was 68-22 where 44 Democrats, 22 Republicans, and 2 Independents supported the bill and 9 Democrats, and 23 Republicans being opposed to the bill (Harding 2014).
