The study of romantic love is rather fascinating. A negative sentiment on this aspect of love articulates across literature, on the credibility of romantic love to lead humanity to future and stable relationships. Romantic love is in form of shared concerns upon which individuals can act jointly or on their own. In a sexual romantic love, there are influencing factors which participants are unaware of. It is the kind of love described as passionate and based on fantasy, it is mystical, an ecstasy and irrational to which an individual exerts no self-control. According to Solomon, romantic love ‘is an emotion that persuades two autonomous individuals’ and brings the freedom of choice that we usually take for granted.
Perhaps the most central issue in romantic love is the issue of subjectivity. David Mertz accounts that romantic love and subjectivity tries to strike a balance between the two. This relationship according to Hooft is a process. It is in this process where an abandonment of the self in a beloved overwhelms an outonoums individual. Indeed, this process ‘as relationship between two persons moves from acquaintanceship, to affection and then to sexual intimacy. Additionally, Hooft doubts the exercise of rational self-control in thisprocess. Taking for example physical attraction as one of influencing factors, individuals find themselves confessing ‘I love you’. Here the individual is reporting a feeling, in contrast to making a firm decision such as a commitment to love. Additionally, other factors such shared experiences, same religious faiths acts to produce same result on the subject. Basing love on these factors then, individual experience a romantic process as an evolutionary adaptation that creates an irrational emotional attachment to the other. The individual is entangled in cycles of moving in and out, of love until this love, lacks meaning. They slip away from this after realizing the demands of true love. For romantic love, the likely duration equals the time of conception, birth and childcare and is usually the time the marriage lasts. Interestingly, this means a newly born child is capable of walking in to the new world: a real product of romantic love. Most marriages incorporate constitutive feature of romantic love. Although, this notion provides a socially acceptable practice to safeguard marriage, is not a solution to personal issues such as the degree of commitment. Thus if divorce was eminent it will still occur.
Romantic love is driven by idealism, characterization of the object of love. As discussed, earlier the romantic process is state that people transforms into. In this case, biological characteristics facilitate either attraction or repulsion through our genetic traits. The point here is that it is possible to have the natural phenomenon pushing us through romantic episodes. Social-cultural factors play their role also. Where issues such as shared beliefs, common political affiliations influence sexual romantic love, the individual autonomy is under mask. According to Hooft, this ideological and structural issues form the reality of those relationships. This reality reflects in two ways, as change of emotions, bringing affection and change of will, which is seen in commitment. However, the momentary nature of romantic love, as matter of fact poses a challenge to the degree of commitment two people will rationally accord to each as a basis for a future relationship. Two critical questions emerge; the duration of commitments and the motivation of such commitments. As a concern for shared agency, Eric M Cave finds that the will to participate in the commitment is an extra level of decision making as opposed to the concern for the shared agency.
