Global Migration
Globalization has brought with it a number of impacts, among them, migration and immigration. With the world rapidly becoming a small village interconnected by technology, more and more opportunities have continued arising out of the same. Nations across the world are developing their economies in various ways, thereby calling for the need of more human resource from other nations. This has subsequently fueled migration to thee countries by people who move out of their home nations. This has brought about the growth of global migration, as people move around the globe in search of various opportunities. Global migration has therefore, been a phenomenon that has gradually grown over the years, to constitute a rather broad aspect of the global economy. This discussion focuses on the impacts of global migration, narrowing down to how Kuwait has played a central role in global migration recently and over the past.
International migration is a key issue that concerns the countries that people leave or migrate. Various effects occur when people either leave a particular country or immigrates to a country. Also, there are reasons for migration. International migration has been encouraged by social science experts as a way to increase world communalism and capitalism that is essential in international unity and governance. Global migration has been considered to have a positive effect on the world economy as it balances the labor market; unemployed people are moving to a country where there are more job opportunities. It therefore opens up for both skilled and unskilled labor in various nations that need the same.
Countries have realized the importance of migration and have developed essential regulations and policies that enable people to move in and out of the country using the right procedure. Kuwait is one of the nations most impacted by global or international migration. Located in the oil-rich Arab bloc, the country has always been in need of manpower to work not only in its oil and gas fields, but also in other sectors of its rapidly expanding economy. This has raised the need for importation of skilled and even non-skilled labor from other parts of the world.
As earlier mentioned, the international bodies such as the United Nations Conference on Earth and Development (UNCED) and the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) have actively participated in international conferences to enable orderly international migration for sustainable development. Shah and Al-Kazi (2017) discuss that freedom for movement as a human right in most countries has been the key reason for countries to adjust to international migration policies to suit people's freedom to move anywhere. Positives of this major step to allow freedom of movement across counties have been observed. For example, people move from a country that lacks employment to a country that has employment opportunities hence reducing the unemployment rate in the world. Social life improves as people learn about new cultures, norms, and languages, which help to enhance relationships and peace. Migrations expose the children to better education and also increases the economic growth of the other regions. Kuwait, in middle Asia, is a good example of countries with a high number of immigrants and friendly policies to take care of the immigrants.
Since the oil boom in the 1970s, Kuwait is a country of interest to many workers, especially those coming from countries with a high rate of unemployment. The oil boom from the 70s created a high demand for employees in the construction works in the oil companies. During this time, Kuwait had very few native citizens, with little to no skills in the oil construction industries. This reason led to the country hiring skilled personnel from other countries such as Sri Lanka, South Africa, and other countries in the Middle East. Immigrants mostly worked in the construction sector and in other service industries which most of them were men.
The highest number of immigrants into Kuwait were the Indians, who comprised around 20% of the total population from the report of the Indian diaspora committee (John 2016). The most common jobs were truck drivers and casual labor force in the industries. Domestic worker's deman...
