The Training Program
In patient-centered institutions, such as a hospital, quality care with nursing staff is mandated for safe procedures, better patient outcomes, and care recipient satisfaction. The [Insert Program Name] Employee Training Program is designed to support nursing practice in [Insert Name of Institution]. This program outlines the perceived needs of the hospital and a detailed plan to handle such difficulties.
Training Needs
Disparities in practice and quality of service are expected with newly-hired employees when compared to longer staying employees. Hospital administrators make constant evaluation is required to create strategies that ensure quality services. On [insert date], the nursing staff of the hospital performed a Total Needs Analysis (TNA). After the assessment, the 2 most identified problems were identified: 1.) Difficulty in managing children's anxieties non-pharmacologically during admission in the ER (emergency room); 2.) Difficulty in assessing dysphagia (difficulty swallow) with stroke patients. The longer staying nursing staff noticed apprehension on how the newly-employed nurses conversed and managed with anxious children who were at risk of emotional meltdowns. They also noticed worried expressions when they were screening for difficulties with swallowing as the hospital protocol requires nurses to be ready in evaluating patients before referral to rehabilitation services for proper evaluation by a Speech-Language Pathologist/ Therapist. To uphold quality services,
A 2-day face-to-face program in teaching the techniques with experts in the field will help in fulfilling the needs of the nursing staff. Morey noted that introducing and providing all communicative behaviors to be learned during the training session, with the inclusion of “doses” of such behaviors in the actual workplace overtime will most effectively teach them (1). Assessments pre- and post-education demonstrated the effectiveness of the training, and as such, the employee training program will follow such a format to tackle the objectives of the program
Training Objectives
Following the TNA of the program, specific objectives are defined to check the effectiveness of the program in improving the nurses' ability to work at par with more experienced peers, and thus the ABCDE method of goal/objective writing will be used. The following objectives have been identified: 1.) Newly-employed nurses will be able to appropriately perform anxiety/distress managing techniques and strategies to manage anxious children as evidenced improved mood after the 2-day training session and 1 month of supervised practice; 2.) Newly-employed nurses will be able to correctly perform and document dysphagia using the hospital’s dysphagia assessment form with less than 20% errors as checked by more senior nurses (>6 months) after the 2-day training session and 1 month of supervised practice.
The first objective will emphasize the nurse’s ability to perform the strategies during situations of noticeable anxiety or distress which can be measured in a patient-sensitive manner. In Sinha’s study, the level of anxiety or distress can be measured from the parent/caregiver report of mood. For children older than 10, their level of anxiety and distress can be self-reported (2). The 2nd objective emphasizes the value of performing accurate screening for dysphagia concerns. This can be performed with senior staff to counter check their findings, or in a study according to Nazarko, speech-language therapists/ pathologists are specially trained in evaluating dysphagia concerns, whose feedback will be useful (3). After the training session, supervision by the senior staff and specialists in the field will help in assessing the effectiveness of the program about 1 month after it has been provided.
Training Cost and Time Allotment
The following table will detail the different phases of the project, including date, the materials needed, the cost of materials. In both days of the 2-day training program, the training will be performed in half a day to facilitate the immediate practice of skills after the training session.

Training Methods
A combination of different methods is used in the training program to ensure meeting the competencies that prepare them for practice after the training session. In Cichero’s nurse training program with screening for dysphagia, it involves the introduction of key concepts for practice before discussing and practicing the concepts and methods of the strategies involved (). Introducing such concepts before the practice of important skills can help prepare for actual skills acquisition. In Morey’s study, the program created involved high active participation of the learning staff, and as such the following strategies were used: practical exercises (to provide opportunities for participants to practice relevant skills), coaching, situational learning, and performance review, setting performance goals, providing performance feedback and performance improvement strategies were important in a team-based approach in teaching. (1). The program will involve lectures on the key concepts to be learned, group disc...
