Lyrics from Massacre 68’s “Elecciones”

“Elecciones fiesta de represión”

Cada seis años

Lo mismo se presenta

Chinguen a su madre

Este lugar apesta

La farsa electoral

La cuenta a su favor

No me gustan los partidos

De tu lista

No me importa por quien lo hagan

Yo sé quien ganara

No me importa que me abstenga

Yo sé quien ganara.

“Fiesta de represión”

ENGLISH VERSION

“Elections, parties of repression”

Every 6 years

The same thing is presented

Fucking your mother

This scene sucks

The electoral farse

The tally in your favor

I don’t like the political parties

On your list

It doesn’t matter to me what they do

I know who will win

It doesn’t matter to me that I abstain

I know who will win

“party of repression”

Lyrics from Corpofilia’s “No Al V Cenentario”

Hace 500 años del descubrimiento

y colonizacion

Del territorio Americano

y su destruccion

Robaron, mataron, violaron

en nombre de su gran señor

Esclavizaron hombres libres

por su diversion

Cambiaron las riquezas

a acambio de las cristianizacion

Hoy todo eso es llamado civilizacion

Ahora lo quieren festejar

le llaman gran herencia

de la “madre patria”

no aceptaremos su burla

ni el engaño, no celebraramos

el V centenario

No al V centenario

No al V centenario

De la humilacion de grandes culturas

No al V centenario

ENGLISH VERSION

It has been 500 years since the discovery

And colonization

Of the Americas

And their destruction

They robbed, killed, and raped

In the name of their great God

They enslaved free people

For their fun

They took riches

In exchange for Christianization

Today all of this is called civilization

Now they want to celebrate it

They call it the great heritage

From the “mother country”

We won’t accept their mockery

Nor their deceit, we won’t celebrate

The V century

No to the V Century

No to the V Century

Of humiliation of great cultures

No to the V Century

Part 1
Question 1
The land use in third world countries has followed the same patterns of imperial control and racial dominance. In most of the third world countries, postcolonial elites inherited land from the colonialists (96). The elites went ahead to reproduce segregated cities. Politicians and civil servants took advantage of their positions and zoned the towns to maintain their status quo. For instance, African officials and professionals sought ways to separate themselves from their poor compatriots. Driven by greed, the elite moved to the leafy suburbs and left the poor concentrated in the slum areas. The poor were denied the opportunity to live decent lives, but instead, the rich considered them to be an impediment to progress.
Question 2
When major events like the Olympics come to town, governments result in demolishing slums. In third world countries, governments dread high-profile international events with worldwide media exposure (104). The authorities want to project an image of a clean and organized city. Knowing that the media will be present to showcase the city to the whole world, the authorities result in relocating slum dwellers elsewhere. Urban removal and evictions are meant to ensure that international visitors do not see such “dirt” in the city. Furthermore, the construction of stadia leads to the displacement of slum dwellers. The authorities take advantage of the informal settlements to evict people using brutality.
Question 3
Governments perceive slums to be a security threat because of their inaccessibility to surveillance. Authorities believe that slums are breeding grounds for criminal activities. Since slums are places where the most impoverished city dwellers live, governments consider them too dangerous to the security of the entire city. Governments deal with the perceived security threat through forced evictions (111). The authorities use the police and other security apparatus, to destroy settlements and displace people.
