One interesting piece of history that I picked up doing this reading relates to oil-based lamps. According to the text, oil-based lamps existed during Babylonian and Roman times. However, this technology was lost for centuries before it was eventually rediscovered later in the industrial age. It is interesting how human civilization could have lost such an important technology. It also shows that had the technology not been lost, the lightbulb's invention might have happened earlier. Another exciting piece of history I picked up regards the invention of the light bulb. To date, I have always thought that the invention pitted only two rivals against each other, namely Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison.
