This week’s reading played an important role in my understanding about the true definition of a slum. I was also able to realise a number of facts about the slum situation in different countries. It is so surprising that UN’s finding show only 19.6 percent of Mexicans total population reside in slums CITATION Dav06 \l 1033 (Davis, 2006). This is contrary to what the local surveyors say about two-thirds of Mexicans living in old government buildings. It is also surprinsing that the definition of a slum as per UN meeting held in 2002 does not include any legal and physical outlook of the settlement. The definition encompasses settlements around the urban area as well as shanty buildings which is totally different from what a slum should actually be. It is also astonishing that 99.4 percent of the Ethiopian population living in urban areas are slum residents CITATION Dav06 \l 1033 (Davis, 2006). It is a surprise that not all urban poor live in slums as most of the poor actually live outside those slums. The slum population tends to be undercounted by government officials.
