How many individuals would want their online activities to be monitored by their employers? People have the right to privacy. The electronic gadgets are meant to help workers achieve their companies’ set goals and meet their job responsibilities. Companies have the right to control the use of phones and computers in the workplace to avoid wasting time by workers who might use these gadgets to fulfill their personal goals. Although workers should not be restricted from using computers at the workplace, employers have the right to monitor their online activities during working hours to avoid wasting companies’ resources and time.
Employers should monitor how workers use computers at the workplace. They should come up with policies to ensure that their companies meet the established goals, which involves a clear definition of what workers should do or not instead of monitoring their electronic devices. Even before the Internet era, firms had rules that employees were required to follow. Some companies had clear policies that no office equipment, such as copiers, fax machines, and printers, should be put to personal use (Bover, n.d.). For this reason, it would not be different now when employers implement policies to restrict the personal use of computers at the workplace. Currently, computers are the most significant office item, and companies have the right to regulate their usage. Employers need to inform workers that they should not use electronic devices at work and that they have the right to monitor for those who do not comply with this requirement.
