Bourdiet’s theories of education explain the concept of symbolic violence to describe a non form of physical violence acting on a person due to the imposition of one’s cultural values over another person from a different cultural value. It supports the idea that students from working class backgrounds have the tendency of dropping out of education earlier than the middle class students
Class equality in education occurs because of differences in resource capital which enables an individual to maintain a position in the hierarchy of a society. Bourdiet’s concept of capital forms a broader sense that entails the perspective of wealth and maintenance of various forms of capital as a matter of production. The dominant principle of domination is constantly challenged by the principle domination by fractions of the dominant class. Based on cultural capital, the wealthy have the dominating power over resources such as the verbal ability, general cultural awareness, aesthetic preferences, scientific knowledge, and educational credentials such as certificates.
The principle generating taste of a particular fraction across all ranges of different fields of domain is termed as habitus. Therefore, in acquiring education, there is a constant struggle that goes on between rising class fractions and those in decline. Hence the reasons for the struggles that occur within the dominant class particularly those lacking economic capital, and the wealthy. For example in Australia, there are instances where children from agricultural backgrounds or urban working class parents attends the Volkschule and Hauptschule and later on enters the work force, whereas, students from lower middle class backgrounds frequently receive vocational training after attending the Ha...
