“If You Touched My Heart,” by Isabel Allende is a short story about Amadeo Peralto, a ruffian who wishes to continue prospering in a world of corruption and bribery. Corruption seems to take disadvantage anyone with weak links to the affluent. As a result, Amadeo marries from . It gives him power and brings his ruin.
Peralta’s world has changed and he has to find ways to prosper. Though with a bad reputation, Amadeo marries the daughter of a wealthy landowner. He meets Hortensia during one of his visits, he cannot resist her. “…the surprising vision of a young girl sitting cross-legged on the ground and cradling a blond wood psaltery on her knees.
