Introduction
Williamson (2010:113) conducted a study under the title “Welcome Home”. The author was responding to a debate on whether there was a division in unity between the exiled (early Babylonians who returned to Judah) and the people of the land (who remained in Judah). It should be noted that the background for the study was from the book of Ezra. The author states that “In Ezra 3:3 they were in a state of fear because of them as early as the time when the altar was first restored, ostensibly in the reign of Cyrus, and in 4:4 they were discouraged from building by them” (Williamson, 2010:113). This motivated Williamson (n.d) to conduct a study with an objective of arguing that information from the book of Ezra requires a different explanation because other evidence proves otherwise. This paper is an objective critique to Williamson’s (2010) publication because it analyzes the main debate, methods used, and evidence provided by the author.
The Main Debate
As aforementioned, the book of Ezra is worded in a manner to suggest that the people of the land (who remained in Judah) and the exiled (early Babylonians who returned to Judah) were divided. Consequently, most if not all textbooks have interpreted the section in question (the book of Ezra) to illustrate that there was a conflict between the two groups. As cited by Williamson (2010: 113), Grabbe (2004: 288) believed there was no opposition between the two parties. Williamson (2010: 113) too shared Grabbe’s opinion hence, was responding to the debate on whether the two groups were divided.
Methods Used for the Study
The writer developed the intended objective using the book of Ezra as the epicenter of the debate. The author also used the books of Nehemiah, 2 Kings, Haggai, Zechariah, Isiah, and Jeremiah. For instance, Williamson (2010: 116) mentions that “The plural form in Ezra 3:3 is found also in these books at Neh 9:30”. The evidence in these books was compared with the book of Ezra in...
