Clovis, Charlemagne, and Pope Urban II each had a significant influence on the development of their individual civilizations. Discuss the achievements and influence of each of these figures, and explain who had the greatest influence on the development of western history.
Clovis
Clovis was a brutal king of the Salian Franks, the current day France. His rule briefly was the most powerful ruler in Europe before his death in 511. He treated his subject as if they were not human beings. Clovis's regime, however, was exceptional. The regime was recognized as defending the church after it adopted Christianity in 500 acting as a defender. Many other Germanic tribes were opposed to Christianity to which Clovis was already baptized into Catholicism, a step that made his regime famous. Despite his pride, Clovis's family united with Carolingians, a warlord, who later took over the rule from Clovis's family.
Charlemagne
Charlemagne came from the Carolingian family that succeeded in the leadership regime from Clovis. Unlike Clovis, Charlemagne dreamt of uniting the whole of Europe under one robust and centralized rule, something he achieved. He built a permanent capital center from where any Germanic rulers would operate. Charlemagne established a different culture called the Carolingian Renaissance. The Carolingian renaissance brought together artists, craftsmen, scribes, and scholars. Opposed to the traditional way of writing where it was in capital without spacing, the writing was now done in lowercase with spaces in between words (Backman, 2013). In terms of the ruling, Charlemagne delegated some of his roles to local and provincial administrators who represented him. The delegated functions, however, were not hereditary.
Pope Urban II
Pope Urban II was a leader in the Papal States and a bishop of Rome and famous for initiating crusades. He was a firm Christian believer who fought antipopes like Clement III. He spread his teachings through crusades, where he drummed up for the protection and upholding of Christian values. In the first crusade, he preached forgiveness of the sins of those who will help in reclaiming the holy land from the Muslims as well as setting free the eastern churches. Besides, he assisted in establishing a court system that would help in the running of the church (Backman, 2013).
Among the three rulers, Clovis, Charlemagne, and Pope Urban II, Charlemagne had the most significant influence over the development of the West. He introduced the most favorable terms that accommodated everybody, including non-Christians. Some of the developments that were put in place during Charlemagne's reign still stand to date, for example, the system of writing where lowercase is prioritized. He...
