Appropriate Food for Infants and Toddlers: The Rule of Five Test

I. After learning about foods appropriate for infants and toddlers, go to your pantry or grocery store and determine if 5 packaged, processed (frozen, canned, boxed or bagged) foods that you would normally eat or serve to your family pass the RULE of 5 TEST. In order for a food to pass the test, there needs to be NONE of the following ingredients named below in the first 5 ingredients listed for that food:
• (High Fructose) Corn Syrup
• Sugar
• Hydrogenated Oils
• Enriched Flour
• Saturated Fat

Name each of the 5 foods and whether it passes or flunks the test (if it flunks, list which of the 5 bad ingredient(s) are in the first 5 and what number it (they) are).
Example: Pillsbury Funfetti cake mix – flunks, Sugar #2

II. Choose 5 different packaged, processed ((frozen, canned, boxed or bagged) foods you would normally eat or serve to your family and see if they contain the “Top 5 ingredients you should never eat” from the handout posted in Blackboard.

Name each food, and list which of the top 5 are in it or whether none are in it.
Example: Canned cherry Pie filling: Artificial color, Red #40

III. Using these 10 foods and what you learned about them as a guide, what changes will you need to consider when feeding a young child in your family so that the child has the best chance to be healthy?
