Standing between me and the tall buildings of New York I think of all the time I spent in the Dominican Republic. The lively atmosphere of Santo Domingo expressed in the music coming from every house and the smell of Dominican food was extremely distant from the New York that I was now accepting as my new home. New York was my new home at 11 years old and with dreams as tall as the buildings around me, I had to rely on Spanish, my first language and the only one that connected me to my past while chasing my dreams in English.
Since when I was a child, I always entertained the dream of joining the police force as a police officer. The feeling of wanting to do my part or duty, the physical exterior representing law and order, the chance to help minorities and the majority protect their society. Now at 27 I am chasing that dream, going to college to become one of New York’s finest police officers. In my life, I have always faced some difficulties but it was not a barrier for me to be more confident.
Though there has been some improvements the adjustment to life in the United States was not an easy one. This was because there were so many differences in our cultures, we sounded different, and the insistence on wanting us to become more American partly made me feel this way all the time as if I was not an American or fully Mexican, but rather something in between. I could hardly speak proper English and had a strong foreign accent; children in school were cruel and often bullied me, however, this pushed me harder.
