The Liberty University MPH Gate System exists to monitor students' progress through the MPH program and to assist with student development. All students must complete the six prescribed gates in order to meet recent CEPH accreditation standards. (Click on the "MPH Gates" tab for more detailed information about the MPH Gate System.)
We use this milestone as an indicator of a student's intent to engage and complete an MPH degree. As a part of the process each student is asked to write a 1000 word essay explaining what Public Health is and how it fits into the student's career goals. This is a non-graded assignment. Please use the template provided below when writing your essay.
Our hope is that the essay will help each student better understand the importance of an MPH degree and their personal calling to the field of public health. The essay will add significantly to our ability to understand our student's plans and provide a framework for advising for elective selection and helping students find an appropriate Practicum experience. Additionally the document may prove useful for the student as she or he seeks practicum or employment opportunities. It is not unusual for an employer to request a writing sample from an applicant.

You may be asked to re-write your essay or provide additional discussion if your essay does not address the essay prompt or if too much outside information is used. You officially pass Gate 2 when your essay has been graded and you have completed at least 12 credit hours. Please check your graded essay for additional feedback or suggestions.

Public Health and its Role in My Career Path towards MPH Degree
Introduction
Starting the process of earning my Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is a clear indication of my desire to be a major player in the field of global health. Public health is an extremely crucial discipline that operates at the point where the community’s well-being, policy-making, and science meet. Fundamentally, it relates to more than one branch of knowledge that aims at the population’s health as opposed to individual patient care with the intention of protecting and promoting health. Public health attempts to stop the disease, prolong life, and improve physical and mental quality by means of collaborated efforts along with informed choices made by the public and private sectors, communities, individuals, and associations. It goes beyond the treatment of traditional aspects by addressing social determinants of health, such as environment, education, and socioeconomic status, which are key drivers in shaping health outcomes. The World Health Organization defines health in quite a persuasive manner as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being; this holistic perspective acknowledges that health is more than just not being ill. There is no overemphasizing the value of public health in society; it supports a healthy nation and ensures dynamic, thrifty, and ambitious citizens.
Public Health Relationship to My Discipline
My passion stems from a long-standing interest in global health trends and the understanding that health problems are interrelated worldwide. This sector is closely linked to the compelling and powerful epidemiology issue. This area plays a key role in public health and is vital to my career aspirations. The main objectives of epidemiology as a health detective entail understanding the trends, causes, and outcomes of illnesses in specific populations.1 I enjoy this investigative component of the research, discovering where diseases begin, how they spread around, and figuring out containment policies for them. I want to make a significant difference in the health policy and infectious disease research field that can help increase public wellness locally and globally. Epidemiology is one of the pillars of public health. It acts as a bridge between empirical research and practical health policy, and as a result, it has been of great importance to my career path.
In my ideal job, I stand at this intersection, directing population health strategies with the help of evidence-based ...
