With the growth in technology, internet has become a major platform to share information. These internet sources including websites and blogs are now important sources of information on issues that afflict the society. Blogs is part of a website maintained by individuals who post the latest news, description of an event, or simply post a video or graphics and they give a chance for the viewers to comment on their posting. Reporters Without Borders (6th April, 2007) observes that since 2002, blogs have received increased coverage due to their function of breaking, shaping and spinning news stories. There different kinds of blogs including a personal blog, organizational blogs and media blogs. Bloggers who play a role in disseminating news may either be professionals in the media industry though a bulk of these does not have training to practice as media professionals. This has raised criticism with some people being worried that bloggers do not respect the laws that regulate the media profession.
Legal issues of the source of information posted in blogs raises questions on whether bloggers respect the copyrights issues and whether their source of information is credible enough to ensure that society receives the right information. In assessing whether bloggers should have the same access to official information, legal standing and first amendment protections as journalists representing the mainstream media, it is critical to be aware of the various roles that these blogs play and their ownership.
