Designing Products for Quality
The process of designing products consider many aspects such as the functions, capabilities, limitations, better options, production cost, and selling price. The Kano Quality/ Design Model identifies exciting quality, performance quality, and basic quality, showing that quality is defined as a function obtaining the requirements of the customer and high satisfaction levels. In the Kano Model it is also analyzed that as time passes, there is an increased demand making the exciting quality turn into a basic expectation.
The Design Process
1 Generation of product idea: This is the initial stage for brainstorming from internal and external sources. External sources are customers, consultants, manufacturers, inventors, experts, etc.
2 Projection of customer’s future needs: The product design should exceed the current needs of the customer with strategic planning with consideration to the future needs of the customer.
3 Feasibility statement of technology: Quality-testing of the product is done to assess performance, limitation, special considerations, etc.
