Innovative Review Report: Bluetooth Accessories
Introduction
Innovation in product development refers to the process of creating new products that improve and meet the customer’s overall needs. Innovation has played a significant role in business and society throughout history because it can help firms and businesses create space in a crowded market. Identifying the needs can help a company find a targeted market and satisfy the customers in new and exciting ways. Innovative products such as Bluetooth accessories have become a regular part of users’ mobile experience in modern days. The ubiquity of Bluetooth technology has made it find varied applications ranging from steaming audio with wireless speakers and headphones and sharing files over the air to tethering Internet connections and pairing gaming consoles and keyboards. Bluetooth-enabled accessories have become useful by the day, which is remarkable given that the technology had a limited scope when it was first developed almost three decades ago (Triggs and Wankhede np). Today, Bluetooth serves as a convenient piece of technology that frees users from the chains of twisted cables and has become the industry standard for wireless connectivity between devices and accessories. Before the launch of Bluetooth technology, early mobile phones connected to computers using weird proprietary connectors (micro USB, USB-C, Nokia Pop-Port, Siemens Slim-Lumberg connector, Apple iPod Dock connector, or On The Go), which replaced the data cables or Universal Serial Bus (USB) (GSMArena np). However, Bluetooth development began much earlier before the USB was the norm. Unlike USB, Bluetooth promised seamless data transfers wirelessly and is much better than infrared technology. Available as a wireless option for synching data between devices, infrared provided a near-solution to the problem that Bluetooth would solve. One key limitation of infrared was that it required users to point or aim two devices at each other during every instance of data transfer. With these challenges of cables and infrared, Bluetooth was thought to be a solution to data transfers common in many Bluetooth-enabled accessories. Contrary to infrared, Bluetooth accessories were omnidirectional but worked within a radius of 30ft, and they did not have amazing speeds and a wide-range advantage. Nevertheless, developments in Bluetooth technology saw the introduction of the first-ever Bluetooth-enabled hands-free headset in 1999 that won the “Best of Show Technology Award” at COMDEX (GSMArena np). Other accessories followed, including the first Bluetooth car kits in 2001 which received mixed reactions over the use of phones while driving in many countries, including the UK (GSMArena np). Overall, the development of Bluetooth technology and Bluetooth-enabled accessories was innovative as it introduced new ways for users to interact with their devices hands-free as well as transfer data without using annoying cables, infrared or weird standards.
History
While the first Bluetooth accessories appeared in 1999, Dr. Jaap Haartsen had already conceived the Bluetooth standard in 1994 while working at Ericsson (Triggs and Wankhede np). In 1998 engineers at Ericson, Intel, IBM, Nokia, and Toshiba collaborated to form a Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) which expanded to 4,000 members by the close of the first year. The formation of SIG also witnessed many devices hitting the stores. Today, the Bluetooth SIG has more than 30,000 member companies globally with varying influencers (Triggs and Wankhede np). The Bluetooth standard of data transfer was named after a renowned 10th Century Danish Viking Harald Bluetooth” Gormsson who united Norway and Denmark and is known for pursuing peace without violence. The uniting abilities of the Vikings were an inspiration for the naming of the standard after the king as the creators anticipated Bluetooth to unite different devices, including computers, phones, and multiple accessories. The logo of Bluetooth also combines the runes, ᚼ and ᛒ the initials of Harald (GSMArena np). The first Bluetooth accessories worked using the Bluetooth 1.0 specification, which was published in 1999. Other standards were later developed to connect accessories, including Bluetooth 2.0 in 2004, Bluetooth 3.0 in 2009, Bluetooth 4.0 in 2013, and Bluetooth 5.0 in 2017. After the launch of the first-ever Bluetooth wireless accessory, which was a headset in 1999, Ericson’s T36 handset hit the stores in 2000 but the production was later canceled due to short market life. Nevertheless, Ericsson T39 was later introduced in 2001 alongside IBM’s ThinkPad A30 laptop with full Bluetooth capabilities built in. these two devices allowed syncing on phones, computers, and other Bluetooth accessories wirelessly. Although a Bluetooth-enabled MP3 player appeared in 2005, the first stereo headphone was already on the market a year earlier. During early 2000, a lot of developments were made in the Bluetooth space and various Bluetooth accessories, including keyboards, mice, and printers appeared. However, mass adoption of Bluetooth during this time was in its infancy since these accessories were only suited for computers with add-in cards and USB dongles to support Bluetooth functionalities (GSMArena np). Bluetooth 3.0 was mainly developed due to speed issues with Bluetooth 2.0. While 2.0 afforded a maximum speed of 2.1 Mbps, 3.0 racked 24 Mbps and users were happy. Although Bluetooth 4.0 was a later development, it was suited for healthcare Bluetooth-enabled accessories and sports sensors as the standard was less power-intensive and devices could work for years with only a single coin-sized battery. Bluetooth accessory users are more interested in power consumption and operation ranges. These concerns were factored in when developing Bluetooth 4.0 and 5.0 in 2013 and 2017. While 4.0 can operate within the 330ft range, 5.0 works within a range of 800ft. accessories powered by Bluetooth 5.0 can also afford data transfers of up to 2 Mbps up from 1 Mbps with Bluetooth 4.0 (GSMArena np). There is yet to be another standard of Bluetooth but accessories powered by this technology have continued to grow every year as shown in Fig 1 below.
