Human Factors in Road Accidents
It is concerning that even with improved roads, enhanced training for drivers, and government efforts to control traffic, road accidents continue to claim many lives. For a long time, poor roads and driving road unworthy vehicles were singled out as culprits for high cases of road accidents. However, even with poor roads and unroadworthy vehicles, road accidents could be avoided, and indeed become a rarity, if drivers could avoid the human factors that contribute to road incidents. Motorists are responsible for making risky decisions such as over-speeding, using phones while driving, reckless driving, driving under the influence, overtaking in dangerous places, and jumping traffic lights. In the only car accident I have been involved, the offender was rushing to work, in lost control of the car due to over-speeding. In fact, most human factors in road accidents are triggered by motorists wishing to hurry and reach their destinations as fast as possible. In this regard, human error is the major cause of road accidents.
Reckless driving, especially during rush hours, is a common contributor to road accidents. Reckless driving involves motorists ignoring or violating traffic rules, such as speeding through slow pumps and pedestrian crossing lanes. Other examples of reckless driving include driving over pedestrian pavements to during heavy traffic. Such acts often result in hitting bystanders or pedestrians. In addition, reckless drivers fail to maintain reasonable distance from the car ahead, which is risky in high traffic. In this regard, adhering to traffic rules can go a long way in avoiding road incidences caused by reckless driving.
