Was Arthur Leigh Allen the "Zodiac" killer?
In the movie, Zodiac, Allen is the most popular suspect as far as the case is concerned. Allen was once convicted for molesting a child from Vallejo, California. In addition, he owned a watch manufactured by the Zodiac Company. This alongside other various strange coincidences indeed represents a piece of circumstantial evidence which point to the fact that indeed, Allen was the Zodiac. Also, Allen’s acquaintance reported his personal suspicion in July 1971 concerning him to the Manhattan Beach police. Later on, the Manhattan police send the information to the police department in Francisco. After being questioned, Allen claimed that bloody knives located in his vehicle during the night of the attacks in Berryessa had been utilized to kill chickens. Although he was not asked for any information, he voluntarily went and made the claim (Gibson 107).
The police had adequate evidence on Allen for them to issue some search warrants. Despite getting a lot of attention from the media, Allen denied his guilt in various interviews by the media. At some instance that he was not the damn Zodiac. Afterwards, the police found explosives and weapons in the basement of Allen in 1991. Although he had a felon status, he was not charged at all. This was because the police could not get any evidence connecting the various Zodiac murders to Allen. In addition, the fingerprints of Allen after police scrutiny never matched any evidence obtained from various Zodiac crimes. On the other hand, speculation about the possible guilt of Allen increased in subsequent years after his demise. This was the case despite the lack of evidence to link him to various Zodiac crimes.
After his death, Allen was rendered unable to defend himself. He had now turned into a man the majority of detectives believed to be Zodiac. To many people, the word Zodiac was supposed to be engraved on the tombstone of Allen. On the other hand, comparison of fingerprints, palm print, comparison of handwriting and DNA comparisons finds Allen not guilty for the Zodiac killings. Also, an investigation by the police that ran for many years failed to materialize into any credible evidence to connect Allen who was the prime suspect to the Zodiac crimes.
