Since the turn of the century, there has been an increasing awareness of the environmental impact of humankind’s lifestyles. The impact originates from pollution, the destruction of the natural environment and consumption. Climate change has become a major issue that has attracted views from various individuals and institutions. The use of fossil fuels has increased the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases, mainly carbon dioxide have been a major contributor to the warming of the planet and climate change. Indeed, extensive research and data are available that demonstrates the scope and scale of the threat to the survival of humans. In most cases, individuals fail to consider the implication of their actions on the environment. However, as awareness of the seriousness of the adverse results of climate change continues to grow, individuals and organizations are considering ways of halting, slowing down and mitigating these effects. In order to address the challenges brought about by human activities, the development and use of energy should be done in a manner that is environment-friendly. The need to apply technologies that enable sustainability has been a major concern. This has resulted in the development of green technology (GT) as a way of minimizing negative impacts on the environment. GT is environment-friendly and should be adopted to minimize the adverse effects of human activities on the environment.
Meaning of green technology
GT is a broad term that denotes a range of new innovative ways to ensure environmentally changes in day-to-day life. The changes are made to ensure that individuals conserve natural resources and the environment. GT is meant as an alternative source of technology that seeks to reduce overreliance on fossil fuels. It demonstrates less harm to humans, flora and fauna and the planet. The application of green technology is expected to minimize the amount of waste and pollution that originates from production and consumption. The concept of GT seeks to enable nations to embrace a green economy, which is one which is low carbon and resource-efficient (Rein and Kelliher 2). GT also includes the utilization of proper technique. In this case, it implies the use of technology that is fit for economic, social, and natural aspects. Countries that are going green are embracing technologies that help in reducing the trail of human activities towards nature. GT is an effective way of switching from ecological corruption that has become the norm in the modern world. The idea of GT has the potential to transform how individuals interact with their environment.
The Evolution of Green Technology
A majority of individuals believe that GT is a relatively recent phenomenon. However, the idea of environmentally friendly technology has existed for quite some time. Even in the early 1900s, attempts to have windmill as a source of energy has succeeded. Solar and wave energy have existed for more than a century. While nothing is new when it comes to GT, people took the technology seriously in the 1900s. In particular, more people began to embrace the idea of GT in 1970 at a time when the social-ecological movement commenced in developed countries (Ishak and Abu, 8559). During this time, the need for the industrialized countries to consider the negative implications of their activities on the environment. One of the viable options for diminishing the genitive implications of the phenomenon was the emphasis on clean technologies. Over the years, green innovation has taken place to bring approaches that save energy, recycle waste, minimize pollution and at the same time generate social and economic value. The awareness of the essence of GT has enabled more people to work towards implementing initiatives aimed at conserving the environments. More companies have also taken the initiative to change their business models to ensure that it supports GT initiatives. Not going green has become a substantial business risk that many businesses cannot afford to take. Hence, more organizations have started embracing the idea of GT.
The Need for GT
There is a need to transition to GT if humans seek to ensure sustainability. Considering the increasing population, humans will continue exerting more pressure on the environment. The amount of pollution will increase if people do not shift from the current use of fossil fuels to alternative sources of energy. These are on the whole extraordinary reasons concerning why humankind ought to think about green technology.
Firstly, the use of GT is needed to make open doors for new businesses. In the wake of unemployment due to the declining economic conditions all over the world, businesses are needed to solve the problem. Usually, the lack of opportunities to do business makes it impossible for entrepreneurs to work on developing businesses that address the needs in society. Embracing GT is an opportunity for more businesses to emerge that develop environmentally-friendly products and services (Hall, Matos and Bachor 881). The use of GT would open doors for new businesses which would in turn work towards addressing the problem of unemployment and poverty. For instance, the sunlight-based vitality sector in the U.S. is responsible for 17,000 job opportunities (Song and Wang). Such a large number of people would otherwise have been unemployed were it not for the companies that have invested in GT. At the same time GT has created room for new opportunities in vitality generation, wellbeing, and nourishment handling enterprises (Taib, Yazid, Udin and Ghani 44). Consequently, while these businesses seek to protect the environment, they will also create employment opportunities for the people. When individuals are economically empowered, there are in a better position to deal with issues related to the environment.
According to Ottman (8), sustainability is becoming an integral part of consumer needs. Due to extensive campaigns on the need to ensure environmental sustainability, more people are aware of the need to go green. Green is more than a marketing position given the need for clients to purchase products that are environment-friendly.
