Importance of Sex Education
Introduction
There seems to be a lot of grey area when it comes to the issue of sex education mostly due cultural beliefs. Sex education is a high quality teaching and learning about a variety of topics related to sex and sexuality including emotional relations and responsibilities, sexual intercourse, sexual reproduction, safe sex, human sexual anatomy, and sexual abstinence. The rising rate of venereal diseases, pregnancy and irresponsible sex among teenagers demands everyone’s attention. Schools have not been able to successfully eradicate the adolescent ignorance about sex. The responsibility for sex education must be shared across all social platforms in the community and more so by parents. Sex education is important for youngsters, as it helps create awareness about the aforementioned matters on sexuality from first hand and accurate sources.
Importance of Sex Education
Sex education is important because it forearms the youngsters from a very early age on matters concerning sexuality. So often, most youngsters usually learn a lot about sexuality at a very early age, some even before the onset of puberty. While it might be quite early for them, sex education at such a stage ensures that they grow up knowing clearly about their sexuality and responsible behaviour (Kendall). This therefore, forearms these individuals with the much needed knowledge on how to handle a number of things from a very early age. There is an increased need for such education at an early age, since some individuals usually start the maturity process at a very early age too. This hence, prepares them for any matters concerning sexuality that they might encounter during that time or even later on.
The other importance of sex education is that it helps debunk a lot of myths that usually circulate throughout the society. Based on each age group and generation, there exist a number of myths that come with them (Hartman & Brangan). These myths, if not debunked at an early age, often goes throughout the lifetime of an individual. In the end, an individual ends up making several wrong sex-based decisions all his or her life. Through sex education, there is therefore the provision of accurate information on sexuality from qualified teachers. Such factual, scientific information saves the young individuals from suffering from too much heresy later on in life, as a result of sexual myths that the society has to offer.
Proper sex education helps to nurture good values and gives a good impression to students. It is important for counsellors to take precaution on how to present this topic to students. A slight mistake may give them a wrong idea about sex. Sex education should be a collective effort from every stakeholder in the society. People often believe that sex education is a role of just a few in the society. However, this opinion does not make sense, because if certain a student has undesirable values and is immoral, then subsequently all his friends will be influenced, as a result of peer pressure. Therefore, it is important to bear in mind that this education needs a proper channel which can reach these youngsters in the best way possible, and with the clarity it deserves.
