In 1997, KRS-One released his third official solo album entitled, I Got Next. The album's lead single, Step into a World (Rapture's Delight), interpolated Blondie's Rapture. Please listen to Step into a World (Rapture's Delight) (you may do so by clicking this link below). The song features an interpolation from the first rap song to appear on Mtv--Rapture. Its title bears an allusion to Rapture and to Rapper's Delight, which is generally considered two of the rap songs that first popularized hip-hop music in a commercial sense. Question 1
According to KRS-One “Step Into A World (Rapture's Delight)”, I find it that the title is catchy and figurative. Stepping into the world openly means, getting introduced to the world to tale your space. Rapture has got many meanings and could mean carrying of someone or something to another sphere. The theme that permeate this rhyme is power. I believe that KRS-One chose such a title for his song to mean that he was introducing himself to the world that with the song, he was going to rise to another level or sphere of being the best in the industry. Similarly, he shouts out that when the music rapture happens only the best musicians will remain. KRS-One sees himself as the best and says the world should know. All through the song he praises himself as the best MC and doing things a different and is not worried about his financial backing but making the best rap. In the refrain, he points to stepping into the world where only the best is left’. The refrain goes this way “Step into a world (Klaka klaka, klaka klaka). Where there's no one left (Buku, buku! Alla de massive). But the very best (Klaka, bo bo, BDP crew, bo bo bo bo) ...” (KRSOneVEVO). At the same time, I understand he could mean to introduce Hip Hop to the world and that with this same song, Hip Hop was going to rise to be known by the whole world like it’s a rapture.
KRS-One incorporates a lot of African American culture in his single “Step Into A World (Rapture's Delight)”. His song incorporates chanting of a rhythmic and rhyming speech which is characteristic of Hip Hop originating from the African Americans. Chang (2005) recorded that a Hip Hop music of the African American must include features like DJing or scratching, break dancing and is also associated with graffiti writings. Clearly, the song includes turntables scratching through various parts of the music for instance at timestamps 0.55 and 02.01. Additionally, watching the video sourced from YouTube (2014), KRS-One recorded the video in an African American neighborhood as one can clearly note the graffiti on the walls in the background of almost every scene. Graffiti writings and paintings are dominant between the timestamps 0:12 and 1:0. There are scenes where only the graffiti writing is shown as in timestamp 0:34-0:36. Again, we see that the element of break dancing, considered an African American culture is dominant in the scenes of this music video. Hip Hop’s break dance originated from the African American Community and it still considered as a feature in Hip Hop and Rap music (Brown 2009). In the intro of the video while the refrain is sung, we start seeing break dancers as early as in 0:08.
