Rational Theories
The primary theories discussed in this chapter are routine activities theory, lifestyle theory, and rational choice perspective. In particular, the rational choice perspective posits that people use their self-interests when choosing to commit a crime that has the greatest benefit. Lifestyle theory states that specific individuals become crime victims due to their way of living. In addition, routine activities theory depicts that crime occurs when there are three elements, including the absence of a guardian, a suitable target, and a motivated offender (Rational Theories, slide 5). In that light, people can do several things to avoid being victimized. First, they should avoid things that make them a target for crime.
