POVERTY AND SOCIAL INEQUALITY
The gap between the poor and the rich is widening across the world. This leads to social inequality as the rich continue accumulating more and the poor continue starving (MacFate, 1995). These economic differences create differences socially separating the rich from the poor. Various theories have been formulated some in support of socialism and others in support of capitalism. Here in is the response to two theories by Karl Marx and Herbert Spencer (Grusky, & Sen, 2006).
Spencer on his theory argues that the social inequality is a natural occurrence in the society because people are different (O'Connor, & Faille, 2000). These differences make people to develop differently. This therefore, would position individuals in various levels in the society. He calls it the survival for the fittest. It is natural since the society is always at the verge of evolution which is natural.
On the other hand, Marx argues that the social inequality is not natural rather it is a problem created by people (Marx, 2008). Some people have limited others from accessing the wealth and the social status as they do. It is therefore, possible to eliminate social inequality brought...
