The purpose of this essay is for you to reflect on, and explain how, the material from this course relates to you as a person, as a Rutgers University student, and as a worker. Write your essay on this topic:
Which labor issue discussed in the second half of this course (after the midterm) affects you the most? For instance, you could write about issues surrounding workers’ rights, race, ethnicity, gender, family leave, scheduling, immigration, collective bargaining, unions, labor activism, or public policy. Describe the issue, how and why it affects you (either positively or negatively), and how you plan to address this issue as a student or as a worker.
Your essay needs to draw on and cite evidence from course materials, including class lecture and discussion topics, readings, and videos. Sources should be cited either in footnotes or parenthesis at the end of sentences and paragraphs. Your essay should have a clear introductory paragraph, supporting paragraphs that are based around how course material relates to your experiences, and a conclusion paragraph.
The length of the essay should be 2 to 3 pages (approximately 500 to 750 words). Well-written submissions will be clear, convincing, concise, and free of grammatical errors and typos.

PERSONAL RESPONSE ESSAY
Through the readings, several insights can be learned. Issues surrounding labor have been well addressed. They continue affecting workers even to this day, despite the efforts by the relevant organizations to streamline the labor environment. From what I have learned in the second half of this course, I feel that the most pertinent labor issue affecting me deals with matters to do with race and immigration. The U.S., as a nation, has been built majorly by immigrants. It is often referred to as a nation of immigrants. The situation on the ground, however, is quite different as there is a serious issue when it comes to race and immigration.
Historically the country used to open its borders freely to immigrants who arrived in seeking opportunities and hence a chance to contribute towards the building of the nation. With time, however, restrictions came in, and stringent measures were put in place to control such an influx. Immigrants became an instrument of bias and discrimination. Back in the country, racial discrimination also took hold in the more significant aspects of labor and even distribution or allocation of it. From the readings, they are termed as racial and ethnic chasms (Meiksins & Sweet, 2013, p.222). Race has permeated through much of what constitutes the current labor environment.
A significant reason for this is that there seem to be some already-designed procedures that automatically classify individuals along with certain aspects of racial stratification.
