Gay and Lesbian Marriage
An approximation of 10% of the world population belongs to the LGBT community (Burki 1286). More than half of that population lives in denial due to the fear of society’s reaction to their sexuality. Given the fact that we live in a society where a substantial number of people do not approve homosexuality, then it becomes a challenge for the LGBT members to live normal lives. They are forced to pretend for them to fit into society. Therefore, this paper will focus on the various challenges facing members of the LGBT community, such as mental illnesses, discrimination, and a high risk of diseases.
One of the challenges that LBT people are facing in today’s society is mental health. They live in a society where some people are not in support of the movement. Therefore, the need for acceptance in society makes it difficult for most of them to live normal lives. An example is a case where an LGBT member is forced to marry a man or a woman for them to conceal their true identity. In such a case, the marriage is based on lies so that the individual might be accepted in society. The overall effect of such actions is that the person would live a life of regret and being unhappy in the marriage because they chose to marry the same person. There are plenty of cases where couples came to realize that their partner is a member of the LGBT community when they already have children. In most cases, such couples end up divorcing, and it is the children who suffer the most. By the time someone is breaking up with their partner to reveal their true identity in society, they would have gone through a lot of mental torture. A person’s sexuality is supposed to be a source of happiness. Therefore, if people live in a society where they have to hide their sexuality, then they end up with unconducive mental health. If a person does not have good mental health, then it becomes challenging for them to carry out their normal activities. Good mental health is one of the most important aspects of an individual’s body, and its absence is considered a medical condition. In extreme cases, members of the LGBT family who find it difficult expressing their identity end up being depressed or using drugs to cover their pain (Hanımoğlu 25). Such challenges could be eradicated if every member of the society would learn to appreciate a person for their true self. However, given that some people in the community do not support LGBT rights, then people will continue having mental problems as they try to fit in such a society by hiding their sexuality. Besides, some cultures would go to the extent of disowning a person if they realize that they belong to the LGBT community. Hence, people in such communities have higher chances of living a lie, a situation that results in poor mental health. It is the wish of every individual to fit in a community without being questioned about their beliefs. However, communities have common beliefs that make it difficult for people with differing beliefs to fit in.
As well, members of the LGBT community face a lot of discrimination from members of the society that do not support their sexuality. There have been cases where families disown one of their own as soon as they realize the person’s sexuality. As well, the same discrimination is felt in other sectors of life, such as school and work. Therefore, for members of the LGBT society to avoid being discriminated against, they end up pretending about their sexuality for them to feel like a part of society. Besides, various religions across the world have different beliefs about the LGBT community. For instance, the Christian community believes that a marriage has to be between a man and a woman. Hence, if a person is a member of the LGBT community and wishes to practice the Christian faith, then they would have to lie to avoid being discriminated against. Such is the case to other cultures across the world that do not support the...
