Ethics Textbook Project: Different Views Of Morality
Objective: To effectively guide students in structuring and writing chapter on an
introduction to ethics for their Ethics Textbook Project.
Chapter Draft. Following the end of each unit, you will write a draft of a book chapter by using your class notes and returned paragraph summaries. Handouts describing the details of each chapter draft will be provided. Basically, each chapter will include an introduction, summary of the subject matter of the unit, an analysis of its importance, strengths, and weaknesses, and a conclusion that includes your personal reflection. Assessed for (R), (I), Analysis/ Application (A), and Creative Expression (E). An Introduction to Ethics. The objective of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the subject of ethics and the author's particular field of interest.
Chapter Beginning. Chapter should begin with paragraph(s) on a particular, original ethical scenario. This scenario should be robust enough that it can be returned to throughout the textbook as the different ethical traditions are discussed.
Chapter Body. Chapter should then transition to a discussion of what ethics is in general. The following list must be included in your chapter. Strongly suggest structuring the chapter in the order presented:
1. Define ethics and morality. If helpful to illustrate, include example.
2. Answer why it is important to study ethics.
3. Give at least 3 examples of moral issues that are of significance to you and
America (China, Taiwan, etc.).
4. Discuss what makes a human act a moral act (choice). Use your ethical
scenario to illustrate.
5. Discuss the parts of the moral act (intention, action, consequence). Define
the key terms then use your ethical scenario to illustrate.
6. Discuss circumstances and their impact on the moral act.
7. Define ethical relativism. Discuss how ethics assumes that there is a right or
wrong and why ethical relativism is logically inconsistent, self-contradictory and an enemy of ethics.
Chapter Ending. Chapter should then end with paragraph(s) that summarizes above, leaves the reader a few questions to ponder, and transitions to what is to come in the next chapter.
Chapter Expectations. Your chapter, in addition to the above requirements, is expected to be written as follows:
● Proper MLA format (12 point, double-spaced, etc.)
● Grammatically correct (proofread at least two times!!!)
● Minimum of two pages in length.
● Submitted in Google Doc format - no exceptions

Background
Philosophers are interested in ethics and morality, and while people have different views of morality, there are expectations that people behave in certain ways. People also consider whether others have a moral character to determine whether to trust them as friends and leaders. Modern societies show concern for moral values as compassion, truth fullness, fairness and justice are valued. Ethics is relevant as this guides people in a society as they have sense of what is moral.
