Saint Anthony of Padua
Saint Anthony was born by the name Ferdinand and was the son of Teresa Tavejra and Martin Boulin. He joined the Order of priests called Aquino when he was 15 years old. However, his parents, being rich and noble, had enrolled him in a school to study priesthood when he was much younger. Initially, he was sent to the school, aged five, to increase the influence of his family by virtue of his priesthood. He joined the order of the Dominicans aged 15 years (DeBiase 9-11). His family was not pleased with the new development and placed him under house arrest for two years, though they finally bulged to his wishes and put him under the tutelage of St Albert the Great after he spent all of his time in the cell studying the scriptures. After he was ordained, he joined the order of Friar because he was drawn to its simple lifestyle. He travelled to Morocco after he learned that five members of his order had been killed. After his admission into the order, he adopted the name Anthony. He is best remembered for his preaching and teaching prowess. He used symbolism and elaborate examples to explain the scriptures to his followers (DeBiase 9-11). When in Morocco, he fell sick and sought to return home to recover. However, the vessels they were travelling in taking him to the coast of Cecily, where he continued to preach and teach despite his ill health. St Anthony died in 1231, aged 35 years, and he was canonized less than one year later, making him one of the fastest canonized saints (St. Anthony of Padua - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online).
