The Lord Will Give Salvation
1The oracle of the word of the Lord concerning Israel: Thus, declares the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him: 2“Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples. The siege of Jerusalem will also be against Judah. 3On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it. 4On that day, declares the Lord, I will strike every horse with panic, and its rider with madness. But for the sake of the house of Judah I will keep my eyes open, when I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. 5Then the clans of Judah shall say to themselves, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength through the Lord of hosts, their God.’ 6“On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a blazing pot in the midst of wood, like a flaming torch among sheaves. And they shall devour to the right and to the left all the surrounding peoples, while Jerusalem shall again be inhabited in its place, in Jerusalem. 7“And the Lord will give salvation to the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not surpass that of Judah. 8On that day the Lord will protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the Lord, going before them. 9And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. Him Whom They Have Pierced
10“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. 11On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning for Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12The land shall mourn, each familya by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14and all the families that are left, each by itself, and their wives by themselves (Zechariah 12: 10-14).

12 The [a]burden of the word of the Lord concerning Israel.
Thus, declares the Lord who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him, 2 “Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup [b]that causes reeling to all the peoples around; and when the siege is against Jerusalem, it will also be against Judah. 3 It will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be severely [c]injured. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it. 4 In that day,” declares the Lord, “I will strike every horse with bewilderment and his rider with madness. But I will [d]watch over the house of Judah, while I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. 5 Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘[e]A strong support for us are the inhabitants of Jerusalem through the Lord of hosts, their God.’ (Zechariah 12: 10-14)
6 “In that day I will make the clans of Judah like a firepot among pieces of wood and a flaming torch among sheaves, so they will consume on the right hand and on the left all the surrounding peoples, while the inhabitants of Jerusalem again dwell on their own sites in Jerusalem. 7 The Lord also will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem will not be magnified above Judah. 8 In that day the Lord will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the one who [f]is feeble among them in that day will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the Lord before them. 9 And in that day I will [g]set about to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. 10 “I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, [h]the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. 11 In that day there will be great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the [i]plain of [j]Megiddo. 12 The land will mourn, every family by itself; the family of the house of David by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself and their wives by themselves; 14 all the families that remain, every family by itself and their wives by themselves. According to the English Standard Version in the second verse of chapter 12, this bible speaks of “Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples”, which is rather different from what the New American Standard Bible, talks about in the same verse; “Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup [b]that causes reeling to all the peoples around”. In the first version, the authors use the word, staggering, while in the NASB version, the authors talk of a cup. The word staggering s used to mean deeply shocking in this passage. This is to indicate that the Lord will use something that will deeply shock the enemies who will try to attack Jerusalem. In the case of the NASB, it goes further include the part that talks about the cup being reeling. The two versions speak of the Lord striking the enemies that are out to strike Jerusalem. However, this is presented using different approaches, all of which have a different magnitude. The aspect of staggering indicates shocking the enemies and confusing them along with pain (Zechariah 12: 10-14). In the case of the NASB, the word reeling also means lurching violently. This is to mean that the enemies will be met with violent response from the Lord for trying to attack Jerusalem and Judah. In this case, it is clear that the enemies were not going to succeed as they would be violently led away with pain and suffering relative to the punishment that the Lord has in store for them (Church of the Eternal God). This is further indicated in the sixth verse, where in the English standard version, the bible talks of making the clans of Judah a blazing pot, which will be amidst wood and like a flaming torch among the sheaves. In the NASB version, the bible talks of making the clans of Judah like a firepot among the pieces of wood ad a flaming torch among sheaves. The two versions use different wording to bring out the meaning intended to the readers and believers. The ESV uses the phrase, blazing pot, while the NASB uses the word Firepot (Zechariah 12: 10-14). The two however are used to mean that the lord will protect the people of Judah with his fire. He will maintain a string wall around them that will mimic the pot on a fire, where all the wood is burning and the pot remains unchanged. It becomes to touch the pot when it is hot and surrounded by a large fire. As such, the enemies of Judah will not have a chance to reach the people, as they will put off by the protective fire that will be found around the Judeans. (Zechariah 12: 10-14)
