Huston Smith outlines eight steps to take to stay on the proper path. The steps further highlight ways that one can follow to live a purposeful and fulfilling life.
The first step is acquiring the right knowledge; achieving a good life takes some convictions (Smith 102). This can be achieved through comprehension of the Eightfold Path and Four Noble Truths to leave aside selfish cravings and overcome suffering, using reason as a restriction to avoid harmful things, seeking intellectual knowledge and gaining direct insight, and understanding life's problems help one to seek and achieve happiness (Smith 102).
One should have the right aspiration by making up their mind on what exactly they want. They should also pursue their interests with passion, and this gives their life significance and motivates them. Seeking enlightenment with single-mindedness also helps in overcoming life’s dislocations. Having the right speech is the critical trigger of lives. Speech and language patterns help reveal our actual image and character, and thinking is affected by their rhetoric (Smith 104). Therefore, they should ensure their speech does not deviate from the truth.
