Paul’s Leadership Principles according to II Timothy 2:1-7
In this chapter, Paul is trying to set forth the significance of defending and proclaiming the great grace gospel of God for immortality and life in Christ. Additionally, Paul tells timothy to be strong within the grace of Jesus Christ. According to the reading, if Timothy fails to muster the strength, suffer hardship, ignore the everyday’s affairs and compete like an athlete within the set rules, then he will lose his salvation and be forever damned. Similarly, the reading encourages leaders to work hard in the same way a farmer does. When we identify that when Paul asserts that God will grant Timothy proper understanding in everything, Paul is not discussing about the understanding of Timothy of something such as quantum physics. Paul is not implying that the Lord will offer Timothy an understanding towards the refractive index readings of the different crystal groups. In addition, it is important for individuals to comprehend “everything” in this context does not imply omniscience whereby Timothy looks like an ultimate genius.
The reading is very simple to comprehend when we factor that Timothy is in the first place in Christ’s grace. Indeed, this is the fact laid out by Paul. Paul completes his point by proclaiming to Timothy to guard and exercise the truths concerning the good deposit and share these truths alongside various faithful men and leaders. In order to accomplish this, it is a must for Timothy to exercise strength in the same grace that is in Christ that Paul encourages him to practice. There exist individuals in churches in the whole contemporary world who simply represent arm chair church directors. On the contrary, these individuals fail to do anything that adds to the ministry on their own. Such individuals simply do not want to function alongside the people of God. They fail to exercise patience and stick it out. In other words, they fail to patiently keep working alongside the people of God. As a result, leadership calls for sticking with people. The single way Christians will become effective ministers is through suffering and sticking with fellow Christians in the course of mistreatment.
