In other words, they are foreign entities that should be treated with contempt. Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit, dressed like a Confucian sage. What would that be called today? What term would be used for those tactics?             Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) dressed like a Confucian sage to reconcile Christianity with ancestor worship. Upon the arrival of Ricci in China in the 16h century, Christianity had disappeared except for a few ‘secret Christians.’ His strategy was to make Christianity acceptable to Chinese patrons by constructing Christian teachings compatible with Confucianism. Today, Ricci’s act would be considered Sinicization. According to Friedrichs (701), this refers to the construction of Christianity with Chinese characteristics.
