Bi-polar Condition: Video Reflection
The special topics and guest speaker reflections are not intended to be formal, polished papers. They
are intended to provide students opportunities for brief (i.e., maximum 500 words) written reflection on
course content. Grading criteria are as follows:
1. Reflections show ample evidence that students carefully read the special topics article/chapter or
viewed the guest speaker recording – 1 point.
2. Reflections directly address the question(s) posed in the reflection assignment – 1 point.
3. Reflections show evidence of thoughtful, meaningful engagement with the material that goes well
beyond surface-level commentary (e.g., “I think the Watters chapter was great because the topic is
so interesting.”) – 1 point.

Video Reflection: Bi-polar Condition
Living with mental illness is a challenge for any individual and people around the persons diagnosed with mental conditions. Jonna's case provides a classic example of the challenges faced by individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Jonna's struggles began after she was diagnosed with depression as a teenager. Jonna struggled with episodes of depression characterized by irritability, agitation, and suicidality. Joanna's challenges were not only medical-related, but her condition also impacted her social life. For example, she dropped out of school and was unable to make friends. Jonna's mum, Jodie, also struggled with raising her two daughters, who were diagnosed with bipolar. Jodie admits that it is frightening to stay with mental illness individuals, especially when there is no clear diagnosis of the condition. While these challenges may not be similar to what is experienced by others, they provide a general idea of the challenges mental illness patients and their caretakers undergo.
