The Practice of Wild by Gary Snyder
The book “The Practice of the Wild” was authored by Gary Snyder and contains a series of interesting essays. The book generally views into the complexities of the human beings as well as their relationship to nature. Snyder skillfully writes about focusing on the second meaning of nature, describing it as the physical universe as well as its entire properties that includes humans. The first two chapters of the book carry some main ideas that are worth analyzing.
The first and second chapter of the book brings a general idea of the way both human and other beings relate. In the first instance, we see Louie, an old man that isn’t willing to leave his Indian values regardless of the social status and change of location. He turns down a visit offer of the only person that could communicate in Nisenan language, stating that he doesn’t think it would be a good idea to see her and that she would not be willing to come to his place (Snyder, 3). This shows how dearly he held his cultural value at all costs, even if it meant lack of interactions with people of his kind. The observation made about Louie and the Nisenan having more crucial business with each other clearly meant that they were still dependent and connected, regardless of their distance. What connected them was keeping their pride, dignity, and other ways irrespective of the circumstances.
Moreover, the story perfectly relates with the second chapter of the Ground Squirrel and Coyote, who have a great compact.
