1 The title ivory tower is appropriate and right for this documentary. The term ivory tower is used to refer to a situation where the pursuit of intellect is disconnected from the practical concerns. The documentary questions the costs of higher education and the impact it has on the youths. It concludes that despite the high costs it does not prepare youths for the real world. Just like an ivory tower stands alone the youths come out of college in debt and with no skills to cope with practical concerns. Therefore, the title is appropriate for the documentary.
2 The Illusion of CollegeCollege creates an illusion that it is preparing the youths for a better life but as seen in the documentary, the burden of the costs of college puts youths in debts and does not prepare them for the practical reality of life, especially harsh reality of a declining job market. Therefore, the title “the Illusion of College” could also work well for the documentary.
3 The image on this poster shows a college grandaunt standing in solace at the edge of a cliff while still wearing his graduation gown. This signifies the truth, about youths from college when they graduate. With a system that puts students in a bubble and makes them lose touch with the reality of life. After graduating from the college the student is in debt and faces the world that he is not equipped to deal with hence the solace.
4 One impression that this movie makes on me is that universities and colleges are just offering an experience instead of education.
The alarming number of students who do not graduate within the stipulated four years is another thing that this documentary brings out. This number stands at 68%. This percentage is highly significant.
Despite dropping out from college, some students still manage to achieve shocking success such as Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates. This makes one question the relevance and need for a college degree.
It also shows the inevitable changes brought by technology growth and economic disaster.
5 Rossi, the creator of this film, brings into light a system of education that not only saddles students with large debts but also does not equip them with skills to help them pay off these debts.
