Union Organizing Process and Collective Bargaining
This week, we have been studying the history of collective bargaining and the labor movement in this country, as well as the collective bargaining process and the field of labor relations. As in past weeks, the field of labor relations is yet another specialty within the larger umbrella of human resources. It is possible to spend an entire career in this part of human resources alone!
1. Describe the union organizing process. Include the relevant laws, the steps required to go through, and the government agency responsible for providing oversight of this process.
2. Describe different approaches to the collective bargaining process (the process of negotiating a contract with a union that has already been recognized as the exclusive representative for a group of employees). What are different ways in which organizations approach this process? How can the organization best prepare for the contract negotiations process?
3. Summarize the views of labor and management regarding unionized workplaces. What are their perspectives (opposing and in agreement) of unionization. What concerns does management often have with regard to having a unionized workplace. Do you believe unionization is a positive, or negative process? Why?

Unfairly targeted employees will come together and consequently form a committee on various departments. These have the constitutional right to organize, adorn and distribute union materials including caps, t-shirts, and buttons. Members sign authorization cards and the National Labor Relations (NLRB) Act offers them protection in the entire process (National Labor Relations Board). The committee develops a concrete list of demands that they wish to be met. This list is regarded as issues program. At the very least, 30% of the workers need to show support if an eligible election is to be held. Meeting this threshold will result in the committee submitting a petition to the NLRB agents for checking on the union’s legitimacy and eventually, conducting an election. The union becomes certified only when they win a majority of the votes cast. Onwards, negotiations begin with the employers.
