The e-Commerce industry is made up of companies that produce and sell products either in wholesale to other businesses or as retail directly to consumer through online delivery services. The industry consists of three variables: business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C), and consumer-to-consumer (C2C). As of 2019, Alibaba was the world’s biggest e-commerce company CITATION Sta213 \l 2057 (Statista). Other global players in the industry include Amazon, JD, Suning, eBay, and Rakuten. In 2017, the value of the global e-commerce industry was $23.8 trillion with the B2B segment accounting for 83% of revenue. B2C was valued at $4.4 trillion in 2018, a 16% increase from 2017.
The United States, China, and the UK are the leading countries in the e-commerce sector. Some of the factors that makes these countries lead in the sector include strong economies, extensive work in technological development, technology-oriented populations, and relatively higher disposable household income compared to developing nations. Furthermore, the leading e-commerce companies are based in the US (Amazon) and China (Alibaba). According to findings by the UNCTAD, about 1.45 billion people over the age of 15 made online purchases in 2018, a 9% increase since 2017 CITATION UNC20 \l 2057 (UNCTAD). The key factors for the increase include increased internet penetration and smartphone technology ownership. The key motivational factors for online purchase include door-to-door deliveries that save time for consumers, access to extensive options for purchase, and relatively lower prices compared to visiting brick and mortar stores.
A key factor shaping these transactions is the smartphone usage. The extent to which consumers users engage in online shopping varies across borders.
