Leadership Success and Failure
Leadership success is integral to the performance of an organization. Three characteristics that define leadership success include empathy, effective communication, and problem-solving ability. The possession of these traits by a leader can help them succeed in the organizational setting. According to Parks, empathy is a desirable leadership trait in organizations, and it involves being other-oriented and an attentive listener (15). Through empathy, a leader can share experiences with followers that can motivate them to perform better. Effective communication is also an important trait for leaders in an organization. As informed by Mikkelson, York, and Arritola, effective communication is a vital leadership trait because it is associated with employee commitment, motivation, and satisfaction (336). Successful leaders are effective communicators because they can clearly explain plans, goals, and task details to their followers. If the followers do not understand the leader’s expectations, their ability to be productive reduces. Finally, problem-solving ability is also an essential element of leadership success. In today’s world where organizations are affected by rapid changes in their environment, the problem-solving ability is necessary for success. Leaders have to gather necessary information and decide on the appropriate course of action (Feser, Mayol, and Srinivasan 81). These three traits are significant for the success of a leader in an organization.
One of the most respected leaders in business today is Satya Nadella. He is the CEO of one of the most successful technology companies in the world, Microsoft. The three leadership characteristics examined above are embodied in his leadership. He is an empathic, effective communicator, and problem solver and his experiences and opinions can offer important lessons to learn about leadership success and failure. Nadella’s professional life started in Microsoft as he started working in the company in 1992 (Ibarra, Rattan and Johnston 3). As a computer scientist, the Indian-born cricket fan advanced to oversee many leadership roles in the company and became its CEO in 2014. He considers empathy an essential component of dealing with problems regardless of the place (Ibarra, Rattan and Johnston 3).
