Film Synopsis
The film “Can You Dig This” revolves around the urban gardening that is currently transpiring in South Central Los Angeles. South Central Los Angeles falls under the largest food desert in America. The documentary illustrates the urban gardening concept by presenting inspirational personal journey of five 'gangster gardeners,' who have worked their way out by planting the seeds for a better life. The film features a range of urban farmers, including Ron Finley who is portrayed as a gangster gardener whose unforeseen strategies have made him become one of the most popular activists in LA. Ron was a former gang member at the age of 23. The film also stars a 21-year-old orphan Kenya Johnson and Mychael Evans who rekindled their life at Compton Community Garden. In addition, there is an eight-year-old girl called Quimonie Lewis who in charge of garden projects at her home. Lastly, the movie features the former inmate Hosea Smith who has successful garden that feeds the neighborhoods at a halfway house. Basically, the movie attempts to paint a different picture of Los Angeles, a community that is perceived full of gangs, drugs, liquor stores, abandoned buildings and vacant lots to a community that now has beautiful gardens where people are planting to change their neighborhoods as well as transforming their lives in the process.
