However, questions still arise as to whether women are the hindrance to obtaining such power (Keating, 17). Should women struggle to gain power over themselves? Should women strive to gain more power over men? Due to the many speculations existing, the topic has become a significant source of debate. What is necessary to understand is that the issue of power is not proportional to the gender of a person. Power depends on the social upbringing of an individual, the cultural and political believes and structure of the society. Therefore, any gender can have whatever level of power they desire as long as they are independent minded. Nevertheless, some argue that some community settings allow for gender bias in sharing power, especially in conservative communities. Generally, women have become their own worst enemy. Females continue to allow cultural and social practices that are oppressive to other women. Furthermore, women have continued to allow oppressive practices against themselves despite knowing the practices are against their well being (Kwatra, 39-40). For instance, some communities continue to carry out forced marriages for girls and female genital mutilation which is carried out by women. In the book “Secret Life of Bees”, Lucy after realizing that her act of killing her mother was not intentional and she did not have the knowledge that such action was wrong changes her perception. August tries her best to inform Lucy that her mother’s intention was to go to her after finalizing the divorce. After realizing that her mother did not hate her, she forgives herself and redeems herself. Hence, Lucy manages to build her self-confidence and succeeds in her endeavors (Kidd, 336).
