Woman Hollering Creek by Sandra Cisneros
The short story, Woman Hollering Creek, is one of many that are written by Sandra Cisneros. She is one of the acclaimed novelist, short story writer, essayist and poet. As such, throughout her career as a writer, she has shown remarkable talent in this field writing some of the award winning pieces that have put her on the limelight. She won the Before Columbus Foundation’s American Book Award in the year 1985 from her novel The House on Mango Street (Cisneros, Sandra). She also won the Pen center USA West Award for the best fiction of 1991 category, with the Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories. This was one of her best pieces given that, it also helped her to win other awards such as the Lannan Foundation Literary Award, the Anisfield-WolfBook Award and the Quality Paperback Book Club New Voices Award. This piece as such, is one that has been studied widely and elicits quite some significant elements of the American struggle of the immigrants in America and more importantly the gender roles in the society (Malli, Marina).
This is a novel that focus on the identity element of the immigrants as they come to the United States and have to decide what part to follow as their cultural. It is also novel that goes into details about the roles of the women in the society at the time along the cultural limitations that most of them faced. The relationships that they had with the men relative to the gender roles that were now shifting as well as the relationships that they had with the other women.
