War Trauma in the Great Gatsby
Introduction
The casualties of war are not only those who fall on the battlefield but even those that walk away dead from the inside. In the Great Gatsby, the effects of war are felt through Jay Gatsby, who comes back from a different man. His war trauma is worsened by losing his love while he was at war. His money cannot shield him from the horrors of the war and the blow to his heart. World War I caused massive trauma for the people that survived as they came back and struggled to fit into society.
Research Problem
The research, therefore, has to determine how the war affects the people and the impact on their lives after they leave the war.
Research Questions
* How is trauma caused by WWI represented in Fitzgerald's work? Who are the main characters affected by trauma?
* What are the symptoms of trauma exhibited by the characters?
* How was the trauma experienced by war veterans expressed in the work?
Effects of War away from the battlefield
War does not just affect the people fighting o the battlefield. It also impacts the people away from it and those remotely connected to it. Daisy is a close friend of war veterans Gatsby, and she also starts exhibiting similar symptoms as war veterans do. She has the same traumatic symptoms as the veterans have. Daisy is trying to suppress the problems of PTSD just in the way of the veteran, which then impacts her emotional health. The symptoms of trauma and PTSD are well established, showing whether one has the problem or not. According to the article by Pretorius (9) published by Mona University, trauma symptoms are well established and include trying to act normal under duress while causing further emotional impact. Refusing to acknowledge problems is a symptom of PTSD since one is still in the denial stage where they do not want to accept the situation. Daisy is having problems, yet she continues to act like all is well, just like the soldiers, exacerbating her mental condition. According to Wakefield (9), war veterans suffer significant traumatic events which need solid interventions to help them live better lives. There needs to be a plan to help veterans and those close to them deal with the traumatic events of the war that hinder them from living normal lives after the war.
Pretense of Normalcy
War trauma does not just affect the older people but also the young ones who ostensibly pretend they are fine. Battling the effect of war and the subsequent trauma is a hu...
