Antimicrobial Resistance as a Major threat to World Health
According to CITATION Wor17 \l 1033 (World Health Organization, 2017), ‘Antimicrobial resistance occurs when microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change in ways that render the medications used to cure the infections they cause ineffective.’ These microorganisms become resistant to drugs because of natural process of mutations that they undergo after prolonged exposure to these drugs. When they become resistant, they become known as ‘superbugs’, and they are harder to eliminate. Since most of these microorganisms cause diseases that are contagious, the resistant concern is that the superbugs can be spread and lead to a major global health crisis since no new medication has been developed to fight them.
The major threat leading to this imminent threat is the aforementioned use of medicine. According to (World Health Organization, 2019), around 600 000 cases of tuberculosis were resistant to rifampicin in 2017. , is the most effective drug against tuberculosis. Most pharmaceutical companies have developed low-quality medicine to fight against various diseases, and they are unable to effectively eliminate them CITATION Edw18 \l 1033 (Edwards, Morel, Busse, & Harbarth, 2018). Though these medicines are able to suppress the symptoms and enable the patient to resume their normal lives, they do not eliminate the disease-causing pathogens, and the remnants start developing resistance to these drugs. CITATION Wor193 \l 1033 (World Health Organization, 2019) , that, 82% of the people who were resistant to rifampicin they were also resistant to other tuberculosis drugs. The public has been abusing drugs by sharing medicine which has continued to expose the aforementioned pathogens to antibiotics and leading to their mutations. In most countries, the healthcare departments have been reluctant to either conduct campaigns to inform the public and healthcare professionals about antimicrobial resistance. Even the countries that conduct these campaigns have not been aggressive enough. The problem also emanates from the healthcare system where by professions are negligent and give wrong prescriptions and or ineffective healthcare system leads to wrong diagnosis. Governments have been reluctant to take the necessary actions to address this issue, and it has been ballooning exponentially. Such cases should be wake-up calls for governments to invest in developing a new arsenal of tools to prevent, diagnose and treat these antimicrobial diseases. Importantly, they should focus on controlling and preventing the development of antimicrobial resistance. low-quality major contributive factor to this problem is rooted in poor administration of antibiotics.
AMR constitutes to be a global concern because it threatens our ability to treat common infectious diseases, resulting in prolonged illness, disability, and death. To highlight the gravity of the problem and why the issue is not localized, the BBC reported that a man in UK conducted super-gonorrhoea from a woman in South East Asia CITATION Jam181 \l 1033 (Gallagher, 2018). The man contracted the disease while on a trip to South East Asia and the symptoms were manifested while in UK. He could have infected many other people in UK. Such a problem could be traced back to South East Asian country where it could still be decimating more people. Thus, to safely ensure that AMR does not lead to a full-blown global health issue, it is important that it is contained in any country. The global defence against highly contagious diseases is as good as the least effective country in the war against that disease CITATION Asl18 \l 1033 (Aslam, et al., 2018).
