An “epistolary” work of creative writing takes the form of letters between characters. “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a kind of this creative writing. “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a short story by an American writer, Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Gilman uses this kind of technique to express the author’s descent into madness both objectively and subjectively. If she had told her story in first person narration (exposing events from inside the narrators head) the audience would not know what to think: the inside woman in wallpaper might seem to actually exist. In the work of Gothic creative writing, the writer decorates upon her personal experience with postpartum hopelessness to investigate into the mental health of a young lady. The main goal the author intent to send through is "to save people from being driven crazy".
The narrator and her husband John are renting a beautiful, secluded estate for the summer. The narrator suffers from what her husband believes is a "temporary nervous depression” (P, 272). He orders her to rest as much as possible, and picks a room in the house for the two of them. I strongly believe John really loved her wife that’s why he could not let her have a room down stars, he felt complete living with her in the same room. The narrator feels vaguely uncomfortable with the estate, but obeys her husband’s decision for the two of them to stay there. She also obeys him when he chooses a large, airy room on the top floor instead of the smaller, prettier room on the ground floor that she prefers. My view towards the narrator’s character is that, besides loving her husband she always respected him. Since her husband is a doctor, he wins all their arguments. The narrator would like to spend her time writing, but her husband, brother (“my brother is also a physician”, p, 272), and assorted other family members think this is a terrible idea.
